We already discussed the monthly bundle plan with Venture Mobile; now let’s talk about their pay-as-you-go plan.
As with all prepaid cell phones, pay-as-you-go plan means that when you purchase airtime, you can talk. If you don’t purchase at a time, you don’t talk. There is no monthly billing on this plan. You purchase time on an as-needed basis.
Pay As You Go Plan Pricing
The cheapest of the pay-as-you-go plans is $10 which gives you 60 minutes of talk time for a period of seven days. It’ll cost you eight cents for sending and receiving text messages and $.66 out of network roaming charges.
Directory assistance costs $1.84 and if you go over the peak airtime rate you are charged $.15 a minute. I don’t quite understand that because this is a pay-as-you-go plan. If you don’t purchase the proper amount of time, you can’t talk so how can you go over it (guess I’ll have to clarify that with Venture Mobile)?
As with the monthly bundle plan, the pay-as-you-go has peak and off-peak talk times. The peak period is between 7 a.m. to 8:59 p.m. and all other times are considered off-peak.
Venture mobile offers several pay-as-you-go minute/time purchase options. Below is an outline of the current cost to purchase airtime (your cost may differ depending on zip code).
|60 Min/7 Days||$10.00|
|0 Min/12 Days*||$12.00|
|120 Min/15 Days||$20.00|
|200 Min/15 Days||$30.00|
|300 Min/15 Days||$40.00|
|250 Min/30 Days||$35.00|
|375 Min/30 Days||$50.00|
|450 Min/30 Days||$60.00|
|600 Min/30 Days||$80.00|
|800 Min/30 Days||$100.00|
|1000 Min/30 Days||$120.00|
|* According to their website you can purchase 12 days and 0 minutes for $12 – go figure.|
What strikes me as odd with this particular program is the maximum amount of time you can purchase is 30 days. They don’t offer a 60, 90 or 120 day option. Their most expensive option which gives you 1,000 airtime minutes for 30 days costs $120. That leads to the next question, can you rollover unused time with Venture Mobile (another question to ask Venture Mobile)?
After reviewing their website I couldn’t quite find the answer as to whether or not the time could be rolled over (nor could I find the answer to the peak time overage) so I decided to use Venture Mobile’s help feature so I could ask them directly. Upon clicking “Help” the following window opened:
As you can see, the Help was of no help at all (their phone number didn’t work either).
Maybe venture mobile is just setting up their website and not quite ready to be unveiled yet, but after seeing the prices and the inability to get help, I think I’ll conclude this review now. Personally, this is not a prepaid service that I would be interested in subscribing to. But, for the die hard review fans, I’ll give you one more piece of information.
Venture Mobile Cell Phone Selections
As of this writing, venture mobile only has three phones available on their pay-as-you-go plan. The phone selection includes the LG 1200, Motorola 720 and the Samsung A660. All three phones are be flip phones, so if you’re looking for something like a full QWERTY keyboard or SmartPhone, you won’t find it here. Phones range in price from $79.99 and $92.
They even have a smaller phone selection for the monthly bundle plan. There they offer the Motorola V265 and the Motorola V170. Both are flip phones and cost $107 and $129.99.
Before deciding to choose Venture Mobile as your prepaid cell phone carrier, please check out a few other reviews. I believe (actually I know) there are better alternatives out there.
